American Idol Reality TV singing competition, on May featured the four top contestants (David Cook, Syesha Mercado, David Archuleta, and Jason Castro),down from 5 as of April 30, supposidly performing rock 'n roll music. Or at least it was music from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Hmmm. Judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson judged and it was a slightly odd night.
From the official American Idol website: "Watch on Tuesday at 8/7c as the Top 4 channel their inner rock stars in an attempt to win viewers' hearts." On Tuesday, May 6 the theme was "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" night. Everyone was wondering what the contestants would sing. Most forum posts in the AI website seemed to think David Cook will rock the house and expected Syesha Mercado to do well. Fewer were confident David Archuleta and Jason Castro will be in their comfort zones.
As it turns out, the night was rather odd. David Cook began with a somewhat average version of "Hungry Like a Wolf" that did not 'wow" the judges, While his performance did not show a real rock and roll flair and his song pick was submarginal, his voice was awesome as usual. On his second song, he left the audience wanting more with an awesome version of "Baba O'Reily" (more commonly known as Teenage Wasteland by The Who).
Syesha Mercado rocked the house with Proud Mary for her first song and did a Sam Cook R&B song last. She sounded and looked great and got mixed reviews. But the second song was not really rock and roll, hense the "oddness."
Jason Castro seemed off, trying a Bob Marley (sort of) mixed-up version of "Who Shot the Sherriff" and then Bob Dylan's "Tamborine Man." The second song was pleasant, but where was the rock and roll??
David Archuleta was a hit with the judges on both songs. He first sang "Stand by Me" and then "Love Me Tender" in his usual perfect pitch and simple style. Again, not rock... but pretty.
Another great Ford commercial will run May 7th, this time starring the Top 4 (David Cook, Syesha Mercado, Jason Castro, and David Archuleta). All the Ford commercial videos can be found on the official Idol website. Ford ought to consider making DVDs of the commercials each season, as they are so popular with viewers.
But more importantly on May 7, 2008...Who will be going home and leaving the show?
