Jon and Kate Gosselin announced their legal separation on their reality series about being parents of twins and sextuplets. The TLC series about parenthood will continue.

Jon & Kate Plus 8, the reality series on TLC (The Learning Channel) reported sad news on their June 22, 2009 episode. Jon and Kate Gosselin, the parents of eight children, have officially separated and have filed for divorce.

Jon and Kate Gosselin Announcement

Jon and Kate Gosselin made their lives an open book with the reality series about the joys and trails of raising eight children. The Gosselins have twins and sextuplets, so all of their children are the result of multiple births.

The announcement of the official separation was not news to people who watched the series and paid attentions to the news. The Gosselin marriage has been the topic of tabloid headlines and television news shows. TLC played the news for the ratings by publicizing that Jon and Kate would be making a life changing decision. The public interest in the messy Gosselin marriage has been so great that the season premiere had a record number of people viewing, with nearly ten million viewers.

Interviews with Jon and Kate were conducted separately, as they each made the announcement on camera. The interviews were intermingled with the programming about the children’s new custom Crooked playhouses.

Jon & Kate Plus 8 a Lucrative Enterprise

The Gosselins have become quite comfortable financially as a result of Jon & Kate Plus 8. They live in a big property in Pennsylvania and buy toys for the kids and the adults. Jon has been pictured playing on his ATV. Kate has reportedly had plastic surgery. Kate travels extensively on book tours.

Jon and Kate may have had everyday lives when they started the series, but the public attention and the financial rewards may have changed their priorities. They say that they want what is important is the kids, but they also each seem to want to go their own way.

What is Next for the Gosselins?

The eight children will continue to live in the house, which the Gosselins called their house. When Kate is home she will live at the house with the children. When it is time for Jon to spend time with the children, Kate will go away and Jon will stay at the house.

According to the Gosselin interview, the show will continue. The series may lose the sweetness of the family togetherness, but could get some new storylines. Since Jon and Kate are moving forward with the show, there will probably be episodes about single parenting, divorced dating and integrating a d new “friend” with the needs of the children.

Divorce is usually sad, with the exception of marriages that involved physical violence and abuse. It is sad to see the Gosselins give up on their marriage, because they have so many blessings. It is possible that in the future the children will look back at these episodes with sadness and regret about the breakup of the marriage of their parents.

Jon & Kate Plus 8 airs on TLC on Monday nights at 9 PM ET.
